하버드 대학교의 바이런 앤드 애니타 윈 드라마 교수이자 영문학과 비교문학 교수이다. 그의 저서들은 철학부터 예술까지 다양한 분야에 걸쳐 있으며 여러 차례 상을 수상했다. 베스트셀러인 『노튼 세계 문학 선집』(전6권)과 하버드 온라인 대형 공개강좌는 4,000년에 걸친 문학의 역사를 세계 곳곳의 학생들에게 소개해왔다. 현재 그는 매사추세츠 주 케임브리지에서 살고 있다.
